‘MAGNETIC FEELS’ is a record that proudly wears its legacy on its sleeve: the lofi sound of nineties slacker rockers - early Beck, Dead Man Ray, Guided By Voices, The Folk Implosion. They all used the new accessible recording technology of the times to record their creative ideas in the (dis)comfort of their own home. Often the hardware would also define the musical vibe – the tape hiss and cluttered sound as distinctive as the songwriting or the singer’s voice. Their music had one thing in common though: a sense of boundless and natural creativity, captured completely in the moment.
Five years ago, singer-songwriter Pie Vleugels (Buffoon) and producer Le Chef Tournel (NAPE Records, Birds That Change Colour) banded together in a shack behind Chef’s home, without any clearly defined plan. In their digital playground they cut and pasted, built and demolished. Conventional ideas about composition and songwriting were increasingly challenged, if not completely abandoned. Their collaboration endured two childbirths, a separation and a number of deaths.
Then, as sudden as it was inevitable, they came out the other end with a bold EP.
‘MAGNETIC FEELS’ is an intricate patchwork of influences, spur-of-the-moment inspiration and slowly simmering ideas – a startling musical fun ride that always stays fresh. A collage rock album for the 21st century.
